Aaron Poon joins RightShip in Melbourne as Senior Sustainability Advisor

We caught up this week with Aaron Poon, RightShip’s new Senior Sustainability Advisor in Melbourne.

RightShip: Aaron, welcome onboard, it is great to hear that you are joining the RightShip family. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am grateful to have joined the Sustainability Team in Rightship and met my fellow colleagues who are exceptionally experienced in the maritime industry. I am very excited to embark the sustainability journey in the maritime space and to work with Rightship’s current and future customers.

Where are you based?

I am currently based in Melbourne, Australia. Prior to moving to Melbourne in early 2021, I was living in Hong Kong and Sydney.

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

My background is in Sustainability. I completed my undergraduate degree in Geography and Resource Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and my master’s degree in Sustainability at the University of Sydney. I am experienced and dedicated in the sustainability field and am always hoping to make a positive impact to our environment and society.

Where did you work before joining RightShip?

I have worked in the Sustainability field in various industries before joining Rightship, including supply chain and private equity. Most recently, I was a Senior Consultant in the ESG- Trust and Risk Team at PwC Australia, assisting clients on ESG strategies and providing due diligence and assurance services.

What attracted you to the role at RightShip?

I have worked with different organizations on establishing their Net-Zero emission strategies. It was alarming for me to see the maritime transport sectors accounted for 3% of the global greenhouse gas emission, which at the same time suggested there are huge potentials for the sector to lower the emission with technologies and vessels management. Rightship is a highly reputable maritime due diligence organization with expertise in the safety, sustainability and social responsibility field. I am very excited to work with my colleagues to promote maritime sustainability to our customers.

What do you think you'll bring to your new role?

My role is focused on the Carbon Accounting Tool developed by Rightship. I am hoping to bring a new perspective to the existing methodology for our existing customers and be an advocate of our tools to shipowners, operators and charterers. I am fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, which provides an edge when interact with customers in the Asia Pacific market.

What are you especially looking forward to in your role?

I am looking forward to building connections with clients and colleagues in the maritime field globally.  Rightship business is expanding, new products are being developed to assist clients on their ESG journey, I am happy of having the chance to witness the changes in the industry in the coming years.

What do you enjoy doing during your downtime?

There are countless breath-taking sceneries here in Australia, I enjoy going out for a hike with my partner during downtime.
