Updated Position on Vetting Requests for Vessels with Russian Port Calls
Following an internal review of our April 2022 approach to the impacts from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, RightShip has updated its position on vetting requests for vessels with actual, intended, or suspected Russian port calls for loading or discharge. RightShip will now process these vetting requests; however, RightShip will not provide positive vetting recommendations for any voyages involving Russian loading or discharge ports.
Given the continued elevated geopolitical risks in the region, we continue to recommend that customers seek internal legal advice on the implications of conducting voyages involving Russia or Ukraine.
Limitations in Assessing Russian-Affiliated Vessels
RightShip remains unable to provide a validated Safety Score or conduct an accurate vetting assessment for Russian affiliated vessels. The ongoing geopolitical situation has impacted data transparency, raised concerns about safe and efficient operations, and introduced risks to crew welfare.
New Safety Score Policy for Dark/Shadow Fleet Vessels
Additionally, RightShip will set a vessel’s Safety Score to N/A if she displays attributes inconsistent with the international trading tanker fleet due to concerns about operational safety, efficiency, and crew welfare. This will be triggered if all of the following criteria are met:
- Vessel type: Tankers
- Vessel age: Over 15 years
- Vessel size: Over 20,000 DWT
- Ownership: Unknown Beneficial Ownership
- Insurance: Unknown or non-IG P&I
Our Approach in 2022
Article on 13 April 2022:
Since our last update of the 1st of April 2022, the geopolitical situation surrounding the Russia / Ukraine conflict has worsened considerably.
After an internal review which included legal guidance, RightShip has decided that we can no longer process vetting requests for which the intended loading and/or discharging ports are in Russia until further notice.
This is regardless of whether the vessel has Russian associations or not.

The RightShip approach
At RightShip, in addition to our ongoing monitoring of sanctions from various countries and organisations including the EU/UK/UN/OFAC/DFAT, and our reflection of bans and changes referenced above, additional Platform measures have been put in place.
These measures are a result of escalating risks associated with Russian affiliated vessels and our ability to accurately assess safety standards, crew welfare standards, and the maintenance of Class and Statutory certification.
Specific changes and expanded transparency to support customers
The primary changes relate to our Safety Score and vetting.
Safety Scores
Since the 16 March 2022, all Russian linked vessels (Ownership, Class, Flag, Entity Associations) are set to Safety Score ‘N/A’.
An associated banner is displayed for those affected vessels, as shown below:

Vetting
Due to the current geopolitical situation involving Russia and Ukraine, there are potential impacts on data transparency, and the safe and efficient operation of a vessel; we are unable to provide a validated Safety Score or conduct an accurate vetting assessment for Russian affiliated vessels at this time.
In addition, if the load port or disport is Russian, we will not be able to complete the vessel recommendation without further confirmation from the Charterer.
Specifically, in view of the elevated geopolitical risk in the Russian / Ukraine area, we recommend that customers seek internal legal advice on the implications of conducting such a voyage.
