A farewell message from Martin Crawford-Brunt

Dear Industry Colleagues,

As we near the festive season I prepare to depart from my role as CEO of RightShip after three incredible and rewarding years, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for support and input on our transformation journey.  Together, we have achieved much.

First, it was important for us to address the industry concern and feedback received around Qi by creating a more explainable, transparent and effective rating system to highlight and reward higher operating standards in safety, environment and social dimensions.

We have taken the time to listen to and understand the perspectives of all three corners of the “freight triangle” – ports, ship operators and cargo interests – in the development of our new platform and the safety score. For example for ship operators the new platform has many features to provide a more efficient interaction with RightShip as well as the event timeline which provides a quick overview and increased transparency on event data and the triggers for changes in the safety score.

Beyond the collaborative work to develop the Safety Score and new Platform, over the last two years RightShip has spearheaded the development of the new Dry Bulk Management Standard in collaboration with Intercargo and leading dry bulk operators. This new standard, which will be rolled out in 2021, borrows from the very successful TMSA for tankers to provide a clear structure and process for the continuous improvement in the management of dry bulk fleets for better safety and environmental outcomes.

Shipping is remarkably adaptable.  However, 2020 has brought additional challenges for our industry that extended well beyond the expected increased regulation, digital transformation and carbon reduction. The pandemic brought a massive change to the way we all work and live which are likely to last into the future. In particular the ongoing need to raise awareness and campaign for the better treatment and respect for seafarers.

While the job I was given at RightShip is complete, my ambition to create a more sustainable, environmentally conscious and safer maritime industry remains; something which resides not just in RightShip’s purpose, but also in my own values.  This can only be achieved through people coming together with a common goal and shared vision, through more collaboration, increased transparency and the industry’s ongoing digital transformation.  When the time is right, I look forward to continuing with this mission.

As I hand over to Steen Lund, I wish you every success in both your personal and professional life. Trust you will have a restful festive season with family and I look forward to reconnecting with you in the New Year.

Warm regards

Martin Crawford-Brunt
