Crew Welfare Self-Assessment

The RightShip Crew Welfare Self-Assessment (CWSA) helps vessel operators assess their crew welfare practices against recognised industry best practice.

Understanding the CWSA

The RightShip Crew Welfare Self-Assessment (CWSA) is derived from the Sustainable Shipping Initiative’s (SSI) Code of Conduct - Delivering on Seafarers’ Rights. It provides ship owners and managers with a structured, practical framework to self-assess their crew welfare practices against recognised industry standards, identify opportunities for improvement, and demonstrate a clear commitment to crew welfare. Free to access, confidential, and available to all DOC holding companies, the tool supports continuous progress towards safer, fairer, and more responsible vessel operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does my company CWSA status affect company/vessel scores and vetting acceptance?

All CWSA data entered into the CWSA Tool is unverified; it does not impact vessel Safety Scores or DOC Scores. Where a customers vetting criteria includes a requirement for a vessel’s DOC company to have a valid CWSA the vetting outcome will be affected accordingly.

Is my company’s specific data made public? No. The full content of your submission remains confidential and is not visible to external parties. Only anonymised, aggregated data is used for industry-wide progress reporting.
Do I need to check every box to "pass" the assessment?

To complete the CWSA submission every box needs to be answered but there is no "pass" or "fail." The tool is designed to reflect that crew welfare is a journey, and showing demonstrable progress over time is the primary goal.

How often should we update our CWSA?

It is recommended that you complete and update your assessment annually to maintain an accurate roadmap for improvement and keep your completion badge active. Self-assessments which are more than 12 months old are marked as expired within the RightShip Platform.
