The Challenge

Managing Fleet Risk Without Clear Visibility

No Standardised Safety and Sustainability Benchmark Vessel operators lack a clear, industry-wide method for measuring a safe, sustainable voyage and identifying where to invest in improved processes and technologies.
Mounting Decarbonisation Pressure With increasing pressure to measure and reduce emissions, inconsistent datasets make it more difficult to evaluate vessel efficiency or build credible ESG frameworks.
Difficulty Demonstrating Progress From regulations to charterer requirements, shipowners face increasing pressure to demonstrate measurable progress on safety and sustainability.

The Challenge

Making Vessel Decisions with Incomplete Information

Inconsistent Pre-Vetting Processes Without an objective, first-pass indicator, charterers may invest significant time and resources in assessing vessels that ultimately do not meet minimum safety standards, adding complexity and slowing decision-making.
Supply Chain Decarbonisation Demands Clients, regulators and investors are demanding measurable progress on emissions reduction. Charterers need a reliable way to select lower-emission vessels and track progress over time.
Fragmented Vessel Data Safety history, PSC records, incident data and environmental metrics all exist in scattered systems, hindering the formation of a comprehensive, comparable view of any vessel at speed.

The Challenge

Quantifying Maritime Risk in Complex Portfolios

Financial Risks of Vessel Safety A serious safety incident can impact a vessel's value, earning potential, and financing profile. Visibility into vessel risk is vital to mitigate credit or portfolio exposure.
Maritime ESG Risk Pressure Stakeholders expect environmental considerations to be integrated into lending and investment decisions, which calls for reliable vessel-level emissions intelligence.
Limitations of Self-Reported Data Relying on information provided by vessel owners and operators creates gaps and a lack of independent insight into historical safety performance, operational practices, and efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Safety Score, and how is it calculated?

RightShip’s Safety Score provides an independent rating of a vessel and its DOC owner’s operational safety performance on a scale of one to five. The score is calculated using five years of verified operational data, including PSC inspections, detentions, deficiencies, and incident history. This structured methodology helps stakeholders assess vessel risk through consistent, data-driven ship safety intelligence.

What is the GHG Rating and why is it widely used across the maritime industry? The RightShip GHG Rating measures vessel emissions efficiency on an A–E scale, with A representing the most efficient vessels. The rating uses a speed-corrected methodology and incorporates EEXI, EVDI, and EEDI values to enable fair comparison across vessel types and sizes. Widely adopted across the maritime industry, the GHG Rating supports vessel selection, emissions benchmarking, and decarbonisation decision-making.
Why might a vessel not have a Safety Score?

In some cases, RightShip may not be able to assign a Safety Score to a vessel. When this occurs, it is clearly indicated within the platform.

This typically happens for vessel types that fall outside the Safety Score methodology or where sufficient data is not available to generate a reliable rating.

Vessel types that are generally not included in the Safety Score include:

  • Small or recreational craft (e.g. motorboats)

  • Tugs and barges

  • Ferries and RoRo vessels

  • Cruise and other pleasure craft

  • Offshore support, supply, construction, and platform vessels

  • Vessels under government service, including those in the U.S. Reserve Fleet

How does the GHG Rating support transparency and vessel performance improvement?

RightShip’s GHG Rating is designed to highlight the most efficient vessels within each segment, enabling charterers, financial institutions, and shipowners to make more transparent, data-driven decisions when selecting or operating vessels.
As vessels improve their emissions performance, their GHG Rating may increase, and a “+” symbol may be displayed. This indicates above-benchmark performance within its peer group, improving visibility and allowing owners to demonstrate and market the environmental improvements they have achieved.

How should I use the Safety Score in my vetting process?

RightShip recommends using the Safety Score as an initial indicator when considering which vessels to put forward for full vetting, saving time in the selection process. The score provides a clear and consistent benchmark of historic safety performance, combined with RightShip's maritime expertise, industry-leading database and robust vetting programme to provide a holistic picture of risk and suitability.

Can I set a minimum GHG Rating for vessels in my chartering programme?

Yes. Many charterers integrate minimum GHG Rating thresholds directly into their vessel selection policies. The RightShip platform allows you to filter vessels by rating and track emissions across your chartering programme. This makes it straightforward to set corporate targets, enforce minimum environmental standards, and demonstrate progress toward your decarbonisation commitments.

How can the Safety Score support vessel collateral assessment?

The Safety Score provides a comprehensive, objective view of a vessel's operational safety history, independent of owner self-reporting. Financial institutions use it to assess the risk profile of vessel portfolios, conduct due diligence on both the asset and its manager, and identify concentration of risk across their books. Real-time insights and API access allow continuous portfolio monitoring as vessel risk profiles evolve.
