Green House Gas Rating
The maritime industry's gold standard for emissions comparison, RightShip's Green House Gas [GHG Rating] provides an independent assessment of vessel design efficiency.
Understanding the GHG Rating
RightShip rates vessels on a scale from A to E. GHG Rating combines EEXI, EVDI, and EEDI data with a speed-corrected methodology to deliver a fair and consistent benchmark across the global fleet. This enables owners, charterers, financiers, and other stakeholders to make more informed decisions that support decarbonisation across the maritime supply chain.

Why the Industry Trusts the GHG Rating
- Trusted Benchmark
- Greater Transparency
- Efficiency Improvements
- Simplified Decisions
- Commercial Outcomes
Trusted Industry Benchmark
Recognised across the maritime industry, the GHG Rating provides a common framework for comparing vessel efficiency through an independent and consistent methodology.

Greater Transparency for Stakeholders
A clear A–E rating gives owners, charterers, financiers, and supply chain partners a transparent view of vessel efficiency performance.

Recognition of Efficiency Improvements
Investments in vessel design enhancements, energy-saving technologies, and efficiency upgrades are visibly reflected within the rating, helping organisations demonstrate progress.

Simplified Sustainability Decisions
Complex efficiency and emissions data are translated into a single, easy-to-understand metric that supports vessel selection, fleet planning, and sustainability strategies.

Support Commercial and Investment Outcomes
Consistent benchmarking helps identify more efficient vessels, reduce emissions exposure, and inform chartering, financing, and portfolio management decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
While both use an A–E scale, they measure different aspects of vessel efficiency. The IMO Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) reflects a vessel’s actual operational performance over a reporting period, whereas the RightShip GHG Rating evaluates a vessel’s modelled efficiency under standardised conditions within a peer group. This approach enables consistent comparison of vessels based on their relative efficiency, independent of specific trading patterns.
The rating is dynamic and reflects a vessel’s current technical state. Owners can improve their rating by investing in energy-saving devices (ESDs) or propulsion upgrades. Once these retrofits are verified by a classification society and the documentation is submitted to RightShip, the rating is recalculated to reflect the improvement.
Verified vessels benefit from a more efficient vetting process. While unverified ratings use available S&P Global data and IMO assumptions, a "Verified" status confirms accurate performance data. This provides greater confidence to charterers and financiers, positioning a vessel at a competitive advantage.
