As the maritime industry faces an increasingly complex safety and risk landscape, staying competitive requires more than meeting compliance requirements. It means being able to anticipate risk, focus attention where it matters and act early. Yet with growing volumes of maritime data to navigate, more information does not necessarily mean greater clarity. The value lies in turning that data into actionable intelligence that enables faster, more confident decisions.
In our latest Innovations in Maritime interview, we spoke with Amine Badry, Product Manager at RightShip, one of the key architects behind the recently redesigned RightFleet homepage and the intelligence-driven PSC RiskIQ solution.
In this conversation, Amine shares how direct customer insights are helping shape the evolution of RightShip’s solutions, from the RightFLEET experience and PSC RiskIQ to the next phase of Fleet Focus. He explores how better use of data can help ship managers prioritise risk, reduce manual workload, support more efficient vessel preparation and ultimately keep their fleets safer, more efficient and commercially ready.
Amine:
I'm the voice for our ship managers inside RightShip. My goal is to understand how different roles within ship management organisations work—whether it's fleet directors, fleet managers, HSEQ teams, DPAs, superintendents, or crews.
I focus on understanding what their daily routines look like, what outcomes and KPIs they're after, and what challenges stand in their way. To do this effectively, I speak on a regular basis with around 3 ship managers every week.
Amine:
The major feedback we kept hearing again and again was a need for more efficiency. One of the main reasons ship managers use our platform is to make sure their vessels are charter-ready—and that translates into a few critical questions: Do we have any pending documents to submit? Are my vessels holding a valid RightShip inspection? What are my performance KPIs?
So we presented different prototypes to customers, and we landed on a design that helps ship managers see most of the information they need in just a snap. This saves them massive amounts of manual work while maximising their fleet readiness against charter requirements.
Amine:
The biggest non-negotiable was addressing what keeps ship managers awake at night: not knowing the unknown. When a vessel is inspected, what are they going to be checked against? That uncertainty creates pressure.
Critically, they also don't want to overload their crews, who are already stretched thin. So the challenge became: how do we help them prepare as best as possible without adding to crew burden? PSC RiskIQ was built directly around these pain points.
Amine:
I'm really happy with the AIS integration we released in early 2026. Previously, PSC RiskIQ required ship managers to manually input upcoming voyages to get the insights they needed. That friction limited both adoption and impact.
Since releasing this in April 2026, our most engaged customers have achieved two-digit percentage reductions in deficiencies and detentions. We've generated more than 30,000 voyages for PSC RiskIQ customers.
Amine:
We still have some challenges to address. Crews have told us the checklist—the way it is today—has room for improvement. They don't have time to go through a long checklist, they need specific guidance on how to address each item, and they need to know exactly where on the vessel to check for deficiencies.
That's where our new AI-powered checklist comes in. The idea is to group similar deficiencies together into one item, summarising insights from multiple deficiency types. This makes it much more concise for crews to digest.
Amine:
FleetFocus serves two main outcomes for ship managers. First, it helps them demonstrate superior fleet performance to ship owners and charterers by comparing their performance against peers and the broader industry—which helps them manage additional vessels and increase business revenues.
Second, it helps them prioritise safety campaigns based on areas where they have the most recurring issues, and then act on them.
We discovered that teams were spending a couple of days every month or quarter manually producing performance reports. We built a new analytics section in FleetFocus where they can configure charts, select time periods and DOCs, benchmark against peers or worldwide industry, and download everything in minutes instead of days.
Amine:
I'd strongly encourage them to start with the RightFLEET homepage. It gives them an overview of pending tasks needed to keep their vessels charter-ready—and they can immediately see what urgently needs action. Whether they need to submit a document, book a RightShip inspection, or submit a PSC closeout, it's all visible in one place.
I'd also encourage them to try PSC RiskIQ. The onboarding is smooth—they just select up to 5 vessels, and voyages are automatically generated based on AIS. They'll immediately get insights on inspection risk and checklists they can share with colleagues and crews to take action.
The conversation with Amine highlights a simple but important shift: having more maritime data is only useful if it can be turned into intelligence that helps people act.
By combining customer insights, trusted maritime data and technology, RightShip is continuing to shape solutions around the way ship managers actually work, helping them prioritise risk, reduce manual effort and make more confident decisions across their fleets. From PSC RiskIQ to Fleet Focus, that means making intelligence more practical, more relevant and easier to use in day-to-day operations.
