Since joining the Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program, the company has reported growing recognition within the maritime community, with customers placing increasing emphasis on equipment authenticity, traceability and alignment with international standards.

This reflects a broader shift in the industry. Compliance documentation alone may not always provide the immediate assurance required during a live transfer or inspection. Crews, pilots and Port State Control officers need a practical way to confirm that safety-critical equipment is authentic and meets the relevant requirements.

PTR Holland has responded by treating traceability as an integral part of the equipment rather than a separate administrative process. Its rope ladders incorporate QR codes that allow users to verify authenticity and compliance with ISO 799-1:2019 and SOLAS requirements. By making this information accessible at the point of use, the system supports more informed decisions before a transfer takes place.

Strengthening Equipment to Meet Evolving Standards

Over the past year, PTR Holland has introduced several product upgrades in response to changing ISO requirements and the need for stronger oversight of pilot transfer arrangements.

Its pilot ladder magnets have been updated and fitted with aluminium tags containing QR codes for immediate authenticity verification. The company has also introduced ISO 799-3:2022-approved man-ropes supplied with aluminium identification tags. Under the updated standard, these ropes must be supplied as certified equipment rather than produced by a vessel’s crew, providing greater consistency and assurance around an important part of the transfer arrangement.

PTR Holland has also developed Kratos securing ropes with a breaking strength of at least 48 kN and a non-slip feature designed to support secure handling under operational stress. These ropes are independently certified and supplied with aluminium tags, enabling their specifications and authenticity to be checked more readily.

Together, these developments help strengthen oversight across the pilot transfer arrangement—not only for the ladder itself, but also for the ropes, attachments and supporting equipment on which a safe transfer depends.

Turning Traceability into Operational Confidence

Digital verification has practical value beyond record-keeping. By scanning a QR code, pilots and PSC officers can access information needed to confirm a ladder’s authenticity and compliance without relying solely on hardcopy documentation. This can simplify inspections, reduce uncertainty and help crews demonstrate that the equipment onboard meets the applicable requirements.

This capability is particularly relevant as scrutiny of pilot transfer arrangements increases. PTR Holland notes that, under the updated SOLAS V/23, Section 2.1 regulation, pilots may refuse to use an arrangement that does not meet regulatory requirements and may formally report the vessel. In this context, being able to verify equipment quickly can help operators identify potential issues before they result in an unsafe transfer, operational delay or reputational consequence.

Traceability can also help address the risk posed by counterfeit or unverifiable ladders. A product may appear suitable on visual inspection while lacking the manufacturing controls or certification expected of safety-critical equipment. Linking the physical ladder to accessible verification information provides an additional layer of transparency for crews, inspectors and pilots.

Supporting Safety Across Global Fleets

The scale of adoption demonstrates the operational relevance of this approach. PTR Holland reports that its ladders are deployed on approximately 1,500 vessels each month. The company has also seen ship-management customers commit to equipping entire fleets with its rope ladders to support consistent compliance with global standards, including the stringent expectations of pilots in Australia and New Zealand.

Fleet-wide adoption can help reduce variation between vessels. When equipment specifications, identification methods and verification processes are consistent, ship managers are better placed to support crews, monitor compliance and prepare vessels for pilot transfers across different ports and jurisdictions.

Scaling Without Compromising Quality

Rapid growth presents a particular challenge when the equipment involved is safety-critical. Increasing production capacity cannot come at the expense of material quality, certification or manufacturing consistency.

PTR Holland has therefore focused on scaling responsibly. Alongside workforce expansion, it has strengthened relationships with suppliers to secure sustainable materials and maintain production consistency. Process improvements and digital tools are also helping the company respond more efficiently as demand grows.

This balance between availability and assurance matters across the maritime supply chain. Vessels need timely access to replacement equipment, but operators must also be confident that faster delivery does not weaken the controls underpinning safety and compliance. PTR Holland’s approach reflects the importance of treating quality management as part of growth rather than as a constraint upon it.
